College Orientation Tackles Internet Postings

Filed under: General — Theo Nicolakis @ 10:07 am

An article published today on CNN notes that colleges are now discussing the risks of Internet postings on sites such as MySpace.com and Facebook, which is popular among college students.

The issues being addressed are not only the predatory dangers of such sites, but also the fallout when supposedly “private” material or material intended for just a few becomes leaked out to a public forum. Examples such as hazing photos of Northwestern’s women’s soccer team (which led to the program’s suspension) or students being disciplined due to online photos showing them with alcohol are silmply the tip of the iceberg.

Today’s technology-savvy world has empowered any individual to become a content creator. This content is not simply confined to text, but multimedia as well. A digital camera or cell-phone enabled camera allows for not simply the easy capture but dissemination of photos as well. Webcams and DV cameras now provide individuals with the same ease of use with video.

The bottom line is that while our society is becoming ever-techno-savvy, it does not mean that our judgement and wisdom when using these new tools and technologies is increasing at an equal rate.

More than ever, then, this new age calls us to continue to be focused on our Christian living both online and off.
