Having a website these days is a must, and the costs associated with having one can vary. I'd like for us to consider the good, the bad, and the ugly of website ownership, ranging from the basic costs of ownership to the deceptive techniques used to scam money from you to the dangers of malware, viruses, and ransomware which can wreak havoc on your website and cost you lots of time and money in the end.
The web is not the only way to reach people, but it is one of the biggest and fastest growing. Technology can never replace the human connection - the face to face conversation, the caring in-person invitation for someone to "come and see." But technology provides us with new doors in which people may walk through. We must make sure these new doors are unlocked with their paths leading to our churches' front doors. The web offers many options for users, and parishes need to be present wherever they expect their potential “audience” to be. And it's not just a matter of being there; it's a matter of cultivating your online presence so that you will be seen when people go to search. If we as the body of Christ are not present online, then those who are will find something else to occupy their time.
Search engine optimization is often an easy concept for Web professionals to wrap their digital heads around, but the implementation and the actual upkeep, however, is another story.
